The Art of Networking

For most people, successful networking doesn't come naturally. It often takes practice and a lot of trail and error. Learn some of the tried-and-true techniques to successful networking.

Prepare an 'Elevator Speech'

Write a summary of what you want people to know about you that can be delivered in less than 30 seconds. It should be interesting and to the point and include: who you are, what you do, what you're looking for. Keep it short and simple. More than that, and you risk turning off the listener.

Be Fashionably Late

Successful executive are usually busy and don't have time to wait around for others to arrive at events. Arrive later if there's no reason to be early. How late depends on the event and who might arrive early, which is worth considering before making your plans.

Walk the Talk

Pay attention to your body language as you walk in the room. Be sure to stand up straight, shoulders back and hold your head high. Smile and shake hands with a firm grip. You may not feel incredibly confident, but just remember to fake it till you make it. In no time you will be.

Work the Room

  • Walk around and look for opportunities to make your way in. Let opportunities present themselves, and connect and respond to as many people as you can.
  • Make your presence felt in creative and kind ways. A sense of humor, smile, encouraging words, recognition and praise are all excellent motivational gestures.
  • Be sure to eat and drink in moderation.

Don't Sweat the Small Talk

There's nothing wrong with a mundane comment to break the ice like, 'Large turnout, isn't it?' or 'What a great location.' Asking a question is often a great way to initiate a conversation.

Listen Listen Listen

We've all been told listening is just as important as talking in relationships. The same is true when it comes to networking. Ask questions that get people to talk about themselves and their business experience.

Stand Out

One of the goals of networking is to stand out from the crowd. To be successful remember key points about people make mental notes and write things down after your event. At your next networking event be sure inquire about the things you recently learned about the person. Offer up praise for recent promotions, ask how that big meeting with X Y & Z went.

Build Relationships

Strangers won't put their reputations on the line for you. Build ties with your new contacts is key. Drop an email to any new contact you meet at an industry event. Then follow up, perhaps with a helpful article or introduction to someone you know.

Networking is a Two-Way Street

Introduce your contacts with people you know who might share common interests as well. For example if you meet recruiter who might be able to help you down the line, introduce him to the smartest people you know in your own network.
