Getting a Promotion

Here are seven tips to make sure when your time comes, you'll be in line and ready for that well-deserved promotion.

Have a Positive Attitude

Keeping a smile on your face and emitting a positive attitude will also show your boss that you are not afraid to take on challenges.

Go Above and Beyond

A willingness to take on more responsibility will only help you score positive points with your supervisor. Doing more will increase your visibility within the company and will enable you to encounter more challenges. Get involved and show extra initiative.

Show Interest

Do you know the specific position to which you would like to be promoted? What does it take to be considered for it? You might be able to discuss training opportunities with your human resource department. If you can determine in advance what outcome you want, taking the necessary steps to achieve that outcome will be easier

Quantify Your Success

What great things have happened at your company because of your efforts? For example, compare your results to last year's. If you were able to increase productivity by 25% without any other major changes, then you're doing something right. Keep a portfolio of accomplishments and quantify any cost savings or revenue enhancements as a result of your accomplishments.

Often, superiors don't take the time to notice these great results, but commend them appropriately if you open their eyes to them.

Know Your Stuff

Keep abreast of the topics and issues in your industry. Whether through self-study or night classes. If nothing else, visit the local library or do some research on the Internet.

Build Your Network

Others have a great amount of power in helping us move up the ladder. Increase your organizational awareness. Learn about all the departments and their goals and what they are doing to reach their goals. Act like you fit the part of the position you want -- dress, speak and act professionally.

Be Proactive

Use the performance review process as a time to ask your boss about your future with the organization. Let your supervisor know that you are interested in progressing and learning more. Demonstrate your ability to handle additional responsibility.
