Mastering the Art of the Telephone Interview

In today's search for the perfect job candidate, the telephone interview is typically the first step in the hiring process. Phone interviews are a quick, cost-effective way to screen potential candidates and filter to a smaller pool of candidates for the in-person interview process. Phone interviews are also used as way to greatly reduce the expenses involved when a company is interviewing a number of out-of-town candidates. It's important to remember that you should prepare for a phone interview just as you would for an in-person interview.

Tips & techniques for success with you phone interview

Make sure you are prepared and have the following available for reference:

  • Your resume and cover letter
  • The job ad/posting
  • Pen and paper to take notes
  • A list of your accomplishments
  • General research you have done on the company
  • A list of questions about the job and company
  • Your calendar

During the interview

  • Turn off the call waiting on your phone!
  • Take your time
  • Smile - it comes through in your voice
  • Speak slowly and directly into the phone
  • Stand up - you sound more self confident and your voice sounds stronger
  • Enunciate and be concise when you speak
  • Don't smoke, chew gum or eat

Don't forget to:

  • Be sure to get the caller's name, telephone number and email
  • Repeating or re-phrasing questions is encouraged; it tells the caller that you listened carefully, and gives you time to think about your answer
  • Avoid the simple yes or no; add selling points at every opportunity
  • Express your interest in the job and the company
  • Ask about the next steps in the hiring process
  • Remember to thank the interviewer and be sure to follow-up with a note
